Wedding Blues: The story of a horse rescue and adoption.
If you're thinking about buying a horse, consider this: Horse adoption. There
are many wonderful horses that need homes and are available for adoption
through several reputable adoption agencies. The myth that rescue horses are
"bad" is simply not true. There are lots of horses who were simply abandon
and need new forever homes. Many have tremendous training and potential to
go on and excel in any discipline.
This is the story of my mare "Blue". Perhaps it will inspire you to consider horse
adoption for your next horse.
"ABANDONED HORSES NEED HOMES, Salem County, South Jersey, February
16, 1999."
Taken from a press release from the Harness Racing Communications.
Twenty seven horses were abandoned when the farm where they lived was
repossessed. The horses, 26 Standardbreds and one Quarter Horse were
abandoned when the farm was repossessed by a mortgage lender.
They were all scheduled to be sold at auction. Fortunately, the sheriff's
department stepped up and expended thousands of dollars and man hours to
make sure the horses were fed. They also opted to sell the horses at the farm
rather than a livestock auction (meat market).
Both the Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF) and the United States
Trotting Association (USTA) supplied assistance in identifying the horses and
helped find new owners for the horses.
My horse, "Blue" was one of the abandon horses. She ended up in a foster
home thanks to the SRF. I read an ad in my local newspaper and saw a stable
that was adopting out horses. This was completely new to me at the time. I had
never heard of horse adoption at that time and I was very curious. I went to the
stable and met "Blue" and it was love at first site! We had some minor issues to
overcome but all in all it has been the most positive experience in my life.
I hope this story inspires you to consider horse adoption. I must warn you that
there are people out there claiming to be horse rescues. Do your research and
you too may find the horse of your dreams!
