| Here are a few tips to save you possible injury and heartbreak: Haste makes waste. Take your time to shop around. It's easy to fall in love with the prettiest horse. It's not easy to correct bad habits this "pretty" horse may have. Show up earlier than your scheduled appointment time to see the horse. You WANT to see how they catch the horse in the pasture, how the horse stands for grooming and saddling and watch it all very carefully. Remember, what you see is what you get! Have the owner ride the horse before you do. Observe the horses behavior and how the owner handles the horse. Have a vet check the horse prior to purchase. A veterinarian can better determine the horses true age. They can also test for possible lameness which could cause problems for you in the future. Your vet can also give you an overall evaluation of the horse and his general physical condition. |
