Little Joe's Training Page
Little Joe is our most recent arrival. He is a 7 year old Quarter Horse ranch gelding that is here for evaluation.
His owner's want to us to determine if he would be a good mount for their 8 year old granddaughter. He is gentle
and offers no buck or bite. His biggest challenge is that he likes to go! We need to try to slow him down and get
him to trust people again. He just arrived and is settling in nicely.
Little Joe is calm and settled and has begun his training. Our initial evaluation is that, with some time, he'll
make a fine mount for an 8 year old girl. He is willing and kind and hasn't shown aggressive behavior. He is
doing excellent in the round pen and stands for grooming and saddling...untied! He tends to be in a hurry so
we need to work on getting him to relax and not feel like he needs to rush things. He has a great handle and is
very responsive to leg and rein cues. He is flexing nicely and disengages his hindquarters when asked.

It's important for Joe to learn to
stand still for mounting and
dismounting. We ask that of all
our horses but it's especially
important if he is going to be
ridden by a small child.
We also want to expose him to
"scary" things like fire, dogs,
cars, etc. because you never
know what you're going to
encounter when you go out on a
trail ride.
He has been handling all this
very well and has offered only
minimal resistance.
UPDATE: Little Joe recently went
home. His owners have
purchased a more suitable horse
for their granddaughter and
decided to keep Little Joe as one
of their own horses.
